Hiding Tells
Do you ever acquire that itch? The itch to wager, to head to the closest betting house, to find a superior stakes casino game of Hold em, to sit at a Black jack table for hours on end. I like that itch. And I really like to scratch it.
I also love to watch people today bet. No 2 poker faces seem the same. When I wager I like to feel I put on a poker face that is impassable. But I know I’ve particular mannerisms. For 1, the only time I smoke cigarettes is when I bet on poker or Black-jack. And then I chain smoke. Except I chain smoke no matter whether I am succeeding or losing, no matter whether I have a beneficial hand or bad.
I once played within a weekly poker game. The game was always 5 card draw. There was a person who played with us each week who always wore a hat. When he was given a very good hand, subconsciously, he would begin touching and wagering with his hat. Pointless to say, he in no way won.
The very best poker player I ever saw was a man who produced additional movements and signals at a poker table than anybody I had ever met. He was flawless in the way he dressed. Always an expensive suit and tie, footwear shined and nails trimmed. He was diligent in this manner. And he was usually brushing his pant leg or holding his hands or stacking his chips in neat little piles.
I use to analyze him for long periods of time. I would attempt to see if I could notice his tell. Picking fuzz off his vest- did this imply he was bluffing? Stacking his chips in a very short pile – did this mean he had a excellent hand?
Several years later I ran into him in a very bar in New York and we had a drink. I asked him if he have been aware of all those activities he manufactured or if they were subconscious. He told me that every single little thing he did at a poker table was deliberate. He said that everybody is constantly checking out everyone else’s poker face. They are attempting to spot the the tell.
So his method was to give them lots to assume about. His thinking was if they had been pondering about him picking a piece of fuzz off his coat and what it meant they sure weren’t pondering about their cards.
His method was distraction. And it worked for him. By no means give up a method that operates for you.
